Additional Information

Voltaire’s literary and rhetorical contributions to the Enlightenment were truly unique, as was his obsession with coffee and chocolate. It was only fitting to name our chocolaty smooth, full bodied espresso after Voltaire. The great thinker who drank coffee non-stop (40-50 cups a day!) was known for importing the finest coffees from all over the world and having the beans fresh roasted in his chamber every morning. Ever so much the chocolate lover as well, Voltaire channeled his inner barista by mixing his coffee with a little bit of tasty chocolate. Caffè mocha anyone?

As with many great thinkers of the 18th century, Voltaire attributed his mental clarity to the drink stating, “coffee is truly a brain stimulant. Under its’ influence conception is clearer and animation more prompt.” His doctors however felt the overindulgence of the beverage was detrimental to his health and was indeed poisoning him . Even after clear warning to limit his caffeine consumption, Voltaire refuted “‘Well,’ he said, ‘I have been poisoning myself for nearly eighty years.’” Voltaire lived to the ripe old age of 83, drank coffee until the day he died and was known as one of the most interesting figures of the 18th century.
